Description
The Land & Water Form Trays (often referred to as Landform Trays) are a foundational Montessori Geography material designed to give children a concrete, three-dimensional understanding of physical geography. By pouring real water into blue-lined trays surrounding raised landforms, children physically create and experience geographic features before learning their abstract representations on maps.
Key Benefits & Learning Outcomes
Concrete-to-Abstract Geography: Converts 3D physical models into clear visual concepts, preparing children for flat maps and nomenclature control cards.
Sensorial Exploration: Tactile interaction—feeling the contrast between land (brown/green) and water (blue), and pouring water to fill lakes or gulfs—makes abstract terms tangible.
Geographical Opposites: Designed in contrasting pairs to demonstrate how land and water reverse roles (e.g., an island is land surrounded by water, while a lake is water surrounded by land).
Language & Vocabulary: Serves as the concrete foundation for introducing primary geographical terms through hands-on presentation.
Design & Materials
Included Components:
A set of matching waterproof trays featuring three-dimensional relief models of contrasting land and water forms.
1 Small pouring pitcher (used by the child to fill the water areas).
Material: Durable, food-grade non-toxic plastic or waterproof coated resin painted with realistic land (brown/green) and water (blue) finishes.
Features: Deep structural contours that securely hold water without spilling, allowing children to clearly observe how water shapes geographic features.
