Description

The Introduction to Decimal Symbol Cards (often called the Large Number Cards - Introduction Set) is a foundational Montessori Mathematics material that introduces the abstract written symbols for the base-ten hierarchy. Used in tandem with the Golden Bead Material, this set presents the written numerals for 1, 10, 100, and 1,000, establishing how digit positioning defines numeric value.Key Benefits & Learning OutcomesSymbol Recognition & Place Value: Teaches children to recognize written symbols for each decimal category and understand that zero acts as a place holder as numbers scale.Color-Coded Category Hierarchy: Reinforces the classic Montessori math color scheme—Green for Units ($1$), Blue for Tens ($10$), Red for Hundreds ($100$), and Green again for Thousands ($1,000$)—providing a clear visual anchor for place value.Proportional Dimensional Scaling: The physical size of the cards increases horizontally with each place value, demonstrating that larger quantities require wider written representations.Concrete-to-Abstract Pairing: Serves as the direct visual match for the Introduction to Decimal System Beads, allowing children to pair the 3D bead quantities (unit, bar, square, cube) directly with their corresponding written cards.Design & MaterialsIncluded Components:4 high-contrast wooden or heavy cardstock cards:1 (Unit) – Single width, printed in Green.10 (Ten) – Double width, printed in Blue.100 (Hundred) – Triple width, printed in Red.1,000 (Thousand) – Quadruple width, printed in Green.1 small wooden storage tray or box for organization.Material: Smooth natural hardwood or thick laminated fiberboard finished with non-toxic lead-free paint and protective sealants.Features: Engineered to exact proportional widths so that when cards are stacked on top of one another in future lessons, they align perfectly to demonstrate expanded form and multi-digit number composition.
